Stay Hydrated to Stay Sharp
Your sudden crankiness might indicate that you need a tall glass of water. New research from the University of Connecticut’s Human Performance Lab indicates that even mild dehydration can lead to changes in people’s mood, energy level, and ability to think clearly. Staying hydrated is even more important than we previously thought.
Hydration is Especially Important for Seniors
As we age, our body’s ability to feel thirst decreases. This means that we may require more liquids but never feel thirsty. It is important to drink plenty even if we don't feel like it is necessary. While mild dehydration isn’t an emergency, severe dehydration is and can cause death. Dehydration is a common reason for hospitalization for the elderly.
Tips for Drinking More Liquids
We have heard from our doctors that we need to avoid caffeine and sodas. And we all know that plain water is best. But there are other great tasting options for when you get tired of water. And remember, doctors recommend 6-8 glasses of liquids a day.
Some ideas to try:
Decaf Iced Tea: A simple solution is to just switch to the decaf version of your favorite iced tea.
Herbal Teas: Herbal teas make wonderful iced teas. Simply brew a cup according to the package directions, pour over a large glass packed with ice, and sweeten as desired. Soon you will be enjoying an ice cold raspberry zinger or peach tea.
Fruit Infused Water: Most of us have had a glass of water with lemon, but don’t just stop with lemon. Branch out and try slices of oranges, strawberries, or grapes. Slices of various melons also add wonderful flavor to water.
Soup: There is no reason that we have to drink all of our liquids. Broth-based soups are wonderful ways to ingest more liquids.
Juicy Fruits: Another great way to “eat” your liquids is to consume more juicy fruits like melons, oranges, strawberries, grapes, etc.
Remember to drink lots of fluids throughout the day. Staying hydrated just might help you stay sharper and happier.
