I was heavily involved as a family caregiver for my grandparents who were in a nursing home, since 2003. My paternal grandparents were in the same facility from 2003 until their passing, in 2009 and 2010. Both had Dementia, Alzheimer's and our family took shifts in our involvement in the care giving, while they were in the facility. We handled feeding times, activities, companionship. From April 2012 through February 2014, my maternal grandmother was in a nursing/rehab facility an hour and half from my home.
I spent my Saturday's and a lot of Sunday's with her until she passed away in February.
I was working full time in an accounting position, which is why I was the weekend caregiver. She was wheelchair bound. I assisted her in the restroom, changed clothes, fed, attended the in-facility church services and interacted with other residents and worship the time I was able to spend with her. I became attached to several residents during this time, engaged in conversations with them and became their friend. This is where my deep passion for elderly care became the path I have chosen to take. I have recently resigned from my accounting job in order to pursue this passion. I love the in-facility environment for those families in need of such service as well, helping with feedings, companionship, interacting, one on one activity, etc. I am also interested in respite care. My profile shows no experience, but that was no paid experience vs no experience with the elderly or those in need. I appreciate the opportunity to follow my passion.
