I have been a caregiver for 10 plus years. In earlier years I worked for Home Instead Senior Care.I worked more than 4,000 hours for Home Instead and gained much experience in the field with the elderly and their families. In 2005 I obtained a Florida State License to care for the elderly. This enabled me to hire additional caregivers to help me.I was employed by a family whose mom had early alzheimer's. They wanted her to stay home with assisted care for as long as possible.I cared for her 7 days a week,12 hours per day with the help of additional caregivers. When she fell and broke her hip I followed her to a local rehab hospital for 2 months and assisted her. Then she went to an assisted living facility.I cared for her there for another year until she had to be relocated to a local nursing home. Her 6 children continued my assistance 7 days a week,6 hours a day.I helped her with 2 meals a day and made sure she was taken care in the manner her family was pleased with.I shopped for her clothes and personal hygiene items weekly.I pushed her in her wheel chair to the community hall for visiting singing groups and different games and activities the nursing home offered.I brought her special snacks from my home and just tried to be sure her days were the best they could be under the circumstances. She had 6 children. Two of them lived locally but were very busy. One of them owned a travel agency and was rarely in town. The other is a local Dr and was on call often and not available. The four other siblings lived across the country.I kept in touch with them regularly by phone & email to give updates on their moms condition.Several times a year they would come for visits and I would be sure their mom was dressed well so they could enjoy visiting her.I kept this job until my lady passed on.After her funeral I felt a need to take a break. This job was extremely rewarding to me on a personal level.I never knew my grandparents. They passed away before I was born so working with the elderly fulfills that void I had all my life where they were concerned. In several of my other jobs I worked with the elderly family member until they passed away and the family's always wanted me to be a part of the funeral services because often I spent more time with the elderly member than they did.Its just a part of life that I really enjoy.
