I took care of my mother, who had Alzheimer's dementia, for six years, until her death. She lived with me. I left my dream job, running a small mental health consumer agency, to do this. The six year gap in my work history has really influenced my life. The only work I could get after my mother died was in retail. Retail is hard work and the pay is terrible. I have decided to get back into care giving because I miss my mother and I enjoy being around the elderly. I'm also very good at it--I like one-on-one.

Other Information

I have no professional training, but I learned a lot in the six years I took care of my mother. I listen and I have a big heart. When I'm missing my mother, and I do miss her even after two years, I take great solace in the fact that she never had to go into a nursing home. I gave up a lot when it came to my career--but I gave her a lot as well. I would do the same thing all over again, even as I face my 50's without a secure career footing.
