Since June of 2014, I began working as a home companion with two clients, one in her late 80s with dementia and the other now 101 years old who has memory issues but is very alert and mobile. My tasks have included helping them dress, massage to increase circulation and prevent dry skin, making meals, giving them medications per their caregiver's instructions, and light housekeeping (making beds, washing dishes, vacuuming, taking out garbage, etc.) and pet care.
My most important responsibility, however, is to provide stimulating conversation and encourage as much independent activity on their part as possible. As a former reporter, I have many interesting stories to share and I try to find books, games, crafts, music and other activities appropriate to the cognitive functioning level of my client and her past experiences and interests that allow us to both enjoy our time together.
