    Live-In Care

CareFamily offers an affordable 24-hour care option. The caregiver stays in the senior's home for at least a full 24 hours, and usually for several days at a time. In a live-in day, the caregiver usually works for 8 hours, rests for 8 hours, and sleeps for 8 hours. Typically, this kind of care is paid by the day and includes room and board for the caregiver. The average cost of live-in care through CareFamily is $130 per day, plus an $25 fee to activate CareFamily’s Protection Package. Through CareFamily, seniors nationwide are receiving 24-hour care for less than $5,000 per month. When you compare this with an agency (nearly $7,500 per month), you can see how much you would be saving through CareFamily.

      CareFamily vs. Agencies
  • CareFamily Protection Package

    CareFamily's protection package

background screenings, bonding, liability insurance, and complete tax management.

    Why are background screenings important?

To hire with peace of mind, families should review the background check prior to making a hiring decision. CareFamily provides a complimentary background check on all caregivers you wish to interview. The screening is performed by a respected third party national provider who is responsible for the results provided. These multiple background screenings include social security verification, nationwide sex-offender registry checks, and a criminal records check.

Why are bonding and liability insurance important?

In the unlikely event of theft, CareFamily allows families to be protected by $25,000 bond protection insurance per family. We have also arranged for caregivers to have $1,000,000 in aggregate liability insurance coverage (general and professional combined) for your protection.

Why is complete tax management important?

You are considered a household employer if you've hired someone to work in or around your home and you control both what work is done and how the work is done. CareFamily connects you with caregivers you hire directly. This means you have the responsibility of filing tax returns and making payments for state unemployment, social security and Medicare, and federal unemployment taxes. In some states, other taxes may apply.

    • Are the taxes expensive?

They may be more affordable than you think. Many people pay overpriced hourly rates at an agency because they are reluctant to assume the tax obligations of hiring their own caregiver as a household employee. That's why CareFamily offers this service as a part of our complete care solution. To give you an estimate, taxes are usually an additional 11% of the employee's wages. In addition to the taxes, we charge a $25 quarterly fee to process all the reports and tax filings.

    • Which taxes must I pay?

We keep track of all this for you so you don't have to, but for your information, the specific taxes and rates are detailed below:

      ● The employer's half of Medicare & Social Security (FICA). The rate is 7.65% of employee's wages.

      ● Federal Unemployment Tax Assessment (FUTA). The rate is 0.6% of the first $7,000 of the employee's annual wages, or a $42 per year maximum.

      ● State Unemployment Tax Assessment (SUTA). This rate varies by state. In most states, it is around 3% and only applies to the first $7,000 to $14,000 of the employee's annual wages.

    • How does CareFamily's tax management work?

We partner with a payroll company to take all the risk of determining tax payments and filing returns for you. Each week, CareFamily's invoice will reflect any FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes incurred. At the end of each quarter, we'll send you an invoice specifically for state unemployment taxes. We'll remit the quarterly tax payments and reports to your state on your behalf. At the end of the year, we'll provide you with a document called a Schedule H, which shows what you owe for federal unemployment taxes. Remember, federal unemployment is capped at a maximum of $42 per year per employee. Also, at the end of the year, we'll provide your household employee with a W-2 so they can file their income taxes easily. CareFamily and our payroll partner assume responsibility and liability so you don't have to worry about making a mistake.

    • Can't I just issue my caregiver a 1099?

Many people think that issuing a caregiver a 1099 will meet their caregiver's tax obligation, but this is rarely the case. According to the Internal Revenue Service, "You have a household employee if you hired someone to do household work and that worker is your employee. The worker is your employee if you can control not only what work is done, but how it is done. If the worker is your employee, it does not matter whether the work is full time or part time or that you hired the worker through an agency or from a list provided by an agency or association. It also does not matter whether you pay the worker on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis, or by the job."

    • Is CareFamily the employer?

CareFamily is not an agency, and the caregivers listed on our site are not our employees. Since you are making the hiring decisions and directing how the care is done, you are the household employer.

    • How does tax management help my caregiver?

Tax management empowers your caregiver to do the right thing. We'll facilitate federal and state withholding on your household employee's behalf and provide them with a W-2 at the end of the year. Keep in mind that if you're not contributing toward your household employee's taxes, your caregiver won't be able to draw on Social Security or Medicare benefits when they retire.

  • Our Story

    Our Story

    Tom Knox, CareFamily Founder

CareFamily was created by a group of individuals who have experienced firsthand the difficulties in navigating long-term care needs for their loved ones. We have a heart to serve seniors and their families. The founder, Tom Knox, entered the home healthcare field more than ten years ago, after his grandmother was neglected in a facility. His mother exhausted herself becoming his grandmother’s full-time caregiver and advocate.

As a result, Tom started a home healthcare company that has served more than 3,000 families, and hired and recruited thousands of caregivers in 2003.

CareFamily was created to answer this need. We are providing all of the benefits that you need to find top quality caregivers in a safer and affordable way. We have taken over 10 years of servicing seniors and put the best elements into creating CareFamily. We focus on senior care because we know senior care. We understand your needs and are committed to helping you safely and affordably navigate care for your loved ones.

Family satisfaction and peace of mind are our priorities. We strive to help provide a rewarding, hassle-free caregiving experience for you, your family, and caregivers nationwide.

    • Are you the same as a Home Healthcare Agency?

No, CareFamily is not a home health agency. Unlike an agency, CareFamily allows you to choose the caregivers you want to meet, interview, and hire. You have the flexibility to determine your loved one’s schedule directly with the caregivers you select.

    • What is involved in your caregiver background checks?

CareFamily provides a complimentary background screening on all caregivers our customers contact. The screening is performed by a respected third party national provider who is responsible for providing accurate screening results. These multiple background screenings include social security verification, sex-offender registries checks, and a criminal records check. We encourage you to review the background screening results prior to making a hiring decision.

    • How can I be assigned a Personal Care Coach?

They can help you assess your needs, choose potential caregivers, and set up interviews. They will be available to support you during the entire care process.

    • How long does it take to set up care?

In most cases, care can start within 48 hours of beginning your search. Some families prefer to take between 3-7 days to perform additional interviews or reference checks. The timing is really up to you.

    • How do I pay for care?

Each week, you’ll receive a notification that your caregiver’s invoice is ready for your review. You have the opportunity to make changes if necessary before payment is processed via credit card or bank draft. Your payment information is always stored securely.

    • Do I pay the caregiver directly?

No, we process all payments. This allows you the convenience of not writing checks or needing cash.

    • How are taxes handled?

As a household employer, the IRS and state tax agencies require you to file and pay taxes on a quarterly and/or annual basis. CareFamily manages all tax calculation, filing, and remittance on your behalf. We also withhold the appropriate taxes from your caregiver’s pay so they can file correctly. At the end of the year, we’ll provide you and your caregiver with the proper documents to complete your income tax filings.

    • How do you protect my privacy?

Our website is password protected, HIPAA compliant, and certified by TRUSTe web privacy compliance. None of your personal information is ever shared without your express consent. See our Privacy Policy for more information.

    • When is my information shared with others?

Information such as phone numbers, addresses, full names or emails are never shown to anyone on our public site. If you hire a caregiver, you’ll have the opportunity to share your contact information. For more information, review our Privacy Policy.

    • What are normal tasks for a caregiver?

Caregivers can provide companionship, light housekeeping, cooking, errands and transportation. More experienced aides can do bathing, dressing, transferring, assistance with toileting and incontinence, medication reminders and much more.

    • Who hires the caregivers?

You do, and we make it simple. All the payment processing, tax support, bonding and insurance is seamlessly handled for you.

    • Is there a cancellation policy?

There is no long-term agreement, so you may stop services with a caregiver at any time.

    • Is there a minimum amount of hours per week?

No, there is no minimum amount of hours per week. The schedule is based on your needs and the availability of your caregiver.

    • How are references checked?

We ask each caregiver to provide professional references. We contact references directly and ask them to leave an audio reference describing their experience with the caregiver. You can listen to these references as they are added to the profiles.

    • What if my loved one needs the services of the LPN or RN?

If your loved one requires assistance beyond basic activities of daily living, you can get advice from your physician, call a CareFamily Coach for a local referral, or search for a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse on CareFamily.

    • How does attendance monitoring work?

Upon arrival at the senior’s home, the caregiver clocks in by dialing a toll-free number from the home phone. This will immediately record the start time. If for some reason the caregiver does not arrive on time, a family member can be alerted by phone and be immediately connected with the scheduled caregiver if desired. Upon completion of a shift, the caregiver will clock out to record the departure time. During this checkout call, caregivers may also record an audio care note so the caregiver to fully describe the day’s activities. The audio care note can be sent to the family in audio or text form. Clock in and clock out information is used to create invoicing.

  • Caregiver F.A.Q.

    • Why can't I log in to my account?

To log in to your account you must confirm your e-mail address. To confirm your account, send an e-mail to confirm@carefamily.com from the e-mail account you used to create your CareFamily account. If your account is confirmed and you have forgotten your password, you can click the "Forgot Password" link on log in box. If you're still not able to log in, send an e-mail with your contact information to confirm@carefamily.com.

    • How do I know if I’m qualified to be a CareFamily caregiver?

We look for people who have experience caring for a senior either as a paid caregiver or as a family member or volunteer. Of course, it’s important to also be passionate about this line of work.

    • When is it NOT appropriate for me to sign up?

It is not appropriate for you to sign up if you have a criminal history, if you use drugs, if you have ever had a professional license revoked, or if you do not have access to a computer or smart phone.

    • How should I determine my desired pay rate?

When choosing your pay rate, consider your professional experience and any licenses or certifications you may hold. We suggest that you request in between $10 and $13 per hour for hourly care and in between $120 and $140 per day for live-in care. Pay usually ends up being about 20-30% more than you would make through an agency.

    • How do I get paid?

You will be paid weekly by direct deposit. Your pay record is created when you use CareFamily’s automated attendance monitoring system. Once your customer reviews your pay record each week, they give CareFamily permission to process your payment on their behalf. After registering, it is important that you learn how to log your hours correctly so that you get paid accurately and on time.

    • How are my taxes handled?

Caregivers who submit a profile on CareFamily work directly for the senior or their family. Caregivers and families work on an employer/employee relationship. CareFamily tracks the time and provides records to process taxes. CareFamily also provides caregivers with a W-2.

    • What is included on my profile?

Your profile includes your photo, brief introduction, professional skills, references, work history, years of experience, and your desired pay rate.
